Flying With Your Dog in Cargo: The Complete IATA Guide

Air Travel • Cargo • IATA

A step-by-step guide to IATA-compliant crates, airline requirements, and how to prep your dog for a safe flight.

Flying with your dog doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With the right preparation and an IATA-compliant kennel setup, airline cargo travel can be far less stressful than it seems.

What you need to know

What is IATA?

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) publishes global safety standards for transporting live animals by air through its Live Animals Regulations (LAR). Most commercial airlines use these guidelines as the baseline for cargo pet travel.

🐾Important: IATA does not certify, approve, or endorse specific crate brands. A crate is considered IATA-compliant when it meets IATA’s published construction and safety requirements — there is no official “IATA-approved” label or certification process.

Before you book: airline rules, reservations, and more

Before purchasing tickets:

• Check airline-specific cargo pet policies (crate type, sizing rules, breed restrictions). Some airlines have requirements beyond the IATA guidelines.

• Reserve space early — airlines limit the number of pets per flight.

• Plan around weather — many airlines restrict cargo pets during extreme heat/cold.

🐾Tip: policies can change seasonally. Confirm requirements again close to travel day, and always verify if your airline has rules beyond IATA’s guidelines.

What you’ll need for an IATA-compliant crate setup

To make a K9 Kennel Boss collapsible crate compliant with IATA guidelines, you will need a few additional accessories. Some are available directly through K9KB, others will need to be sourced separately. We've linked some of our favorites at the end of this blog!

Required:

Door guard

Rear spacer bar

• “LIVE ANIMAL” and “THIS WAY UP” stickers

• Externally-filled water container

• Veterinary health certificate (usually within 10 days of travel - double check with your airline)

Recommended:

• Your dog’s name + your contact info clearly visible on the exterior

• Small travel kit: extra bolts, zip ties, stickers, and printed paperwork

• Vaccination/rabies records (if required by airline or destination)

Choosing the right crate size (IATA formula)

Correct sizing is essential for IATA compliance and your dog's comfort. Your pup should be able to sit, stand, turn around, and lie down naturally.

How to measure your dog for airline cargo travel crate sizing using the IATA formula

Measurements needed (with your dog in the standing position):

• A = length of animal from nose to base of tail

• B = height from the ground to elbow joint

• C = width across shoulders (or widest point)

• D = height from the ground to the top of head or tip of ear (highest point)

IATA sizing formula:

• Length: A + ½B

• Width: C × 2

• Height: D + bedding thickness

🐾 Note: If your dog is a snub-nosed breed, many airlines have additional restrictions and sizing guidance can differ. Always confirm with your airline.

Getting your dog ready (crate training)

Crate familiarity is one of the biggest parts of a smooth travel day. Well before your flight, let your dog eat, nap, and relax in the crate so it becomes a safe, familiar space.

Day-of-flight checklist

• Assemble the crate fully before arriving at check-in

• Use absorbent bedding on the crate floor

• Secure the food/water container to the crate interior (optional: freeze water overnight to reduce spills)

• Remove collars/leashes from your dog (these can be attached through the crate’s top handles)

• Many industry guidelines discourage sedation medications due to potential health risks. Consult with your vet prior to use

Important reminders (limits, weight, international rules)

• Some airlines add requirements beyond IATA’s baseline guidelines

• Many enforce a maximum combined weight for dog + crate

• International destinations (including Hawaii) may require extra health steps or quarantine

🐾Tip: Always confirm your airline’s latest rules before travel day.
